Assignment 3: creating a ‘social website’ with a mashup editor

Yahoo pipes is a mashup application which allows the user to ‘mash’ together information from various sources and then finally create a single site which consists purely of the information you are interested in from all the other various sources.

Before I had started my assignment I had taken a look at both yahoo pipes and Google mashup editor and decided to use yahoo pipes in order to create my site. The reason for this is because out of the two I found yahoo more understandable in terms of being able to use it and also was able to find a few tutorials online that would help me understand using the application better.

Once I had worked out how to use yahoo pipes and familiarized myself with the layout and tools available I decided to create a wrestling site which would provide me with news and updates from two major wrestling companies the world wrestling entertainment (WWE) and Total Non-Stop Action (TNA). In order to do this I had selected a few wrestling news websites and created a filter allowing specific information through which I was interested in such as Impact and Smackdown which are two major weekly shows ran by each company. I also used flickr to help gather images for my site.
